Custom 450® stainless is a martensitic age-hardenable stainless steel which exhibits very good corrosion resistance (similar to that of Stainless Type 304) with moderate strength (similar to that of Stainless Type 410). the alloy has a yield strength somewhat greater than 100 ksi (689 MPa) in the annealed condition, but is easily fabricated. A single-step aging treatment develops higher strength with good ductility and toughness. This stainless can be machined, hot-worked, and cold-formed in the same manner as other martensitic age-hardenable stainless steels. A particular advantage is ease of welding and brazing. Custom 450 stainless is generally supplied in the annealed condition, requiring no heat treatment by the user for many applications. Because it has corrosion resistance like Type 304 stainless but three times the yield strength, it has been used in applications where Type 304 was not strong enough. On the other hand, it has also replaced Type 410 stainless directly on a strength basis where Type 410 had insufficient corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties will depend on the aging temperature selected.

20Cb-3 ® is an austenitic stainless steel possessing excellent resistance to hot sulfuric acid and many other aggressive environments which would readily attack Type 316 stainless. This alloy exhibits superior resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in boiling 20 to 40% sulfuric acid. 20Cb-3 stainless is also stabilized to limit intergranular attack, even in the sensitized condition. Corrosion tests on annealed and sensitized material conducted in the Ferric Sulfate – 50% Sulfuric Acid Test resulted in rates of 0.002 inches per month maximum. Important advantages of 20Cb-3 stainless are its excellent mechanical properties and comparative ease of fabrication. The presence of columbium in the alloy minimizes the precipitation of carbides during welding. Assemblies usually have been placed in service in the as-welded condition.

This material has found wide use in all phases of the chemical and allied industries. It has been used extensively in the processing of synthetic rubber, high-octane gasoline, solvents, explosives, plastics, synthetic fibers, heavy chemicals, organic chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and agrichemicals. 20Cb-3 stainless has also been used in SO2 scrubbers where acid content, such as sulfuric acid, is of more concern than high-halogen content, such as chlorides. Other applications have included use in fans, mixing tanks, agitators, distillation towers, heat exchangers, process piping, bubble caps, metal cleaning and pickling tanks, spray pickling equipment, pump shafts and rods, valve stems, bolts, nuts, washers, tie rods, continuous-line pickling equipment including racks, etc.

Material Notes: Nickel content above includes cobalt. A nickel-chromium alloy with good oxidation resistance at high temperatures and resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking, corrosion by high-purity water, and caustic corrosion. Used for furnace components, in chemical and food processing, in nuclear engineering, and for sparking electrodes. Standard product forms are round, hexagon, extruded section, flats, forging stock, pipe, tube, plate, sheet, strip, and wire.

Data provided by the manufacturer, Special Metals.

MicroGroup’s inventory of small diameter 304 and 316 and other stainless steel, nickel based alloys, and titanium alloys exceeds 5 million feet. Material Notes: Iron content calculated as remainder.

Hiperco® alloy 50 is an iron-cobalt-vanadium soft magnetic alloy which exhibits high magnetic saturation (24 kilogauss), high D.C. maximum permeability, low D.C. coercive force, and low A.C. core loss. This alloy is produced in strip form only and contains a small niobium addition for grain refinement during mill processing and final heat treatment of strip.

Hiperco alloy 50 strip has been used primarily in the manufacture of rotor and stator laminations in motors and generators for aircraft power generation applications. These laminations are stamped from cold rolled strip and must be final annealed in a protective atmosphere or vacuum environment at a temperature which will provide and optimum combination of mechanical and magnetic properties to withstand the high stresses encountered in service.

Hiperco 50 has the same nominal composition as Vanadium Permendur and Permendur V.
